Online Masterclass: How to Draw Trans and Non-Binary Characters

Learn to illustrate trans and non-binary characters.

When, Where

  • Zoom

Learn how to draw trans and non-binary characters in a respectful way at this masterclass with trans artist Julian Gray.

For illustrators who want to portray a diverse range of people, the ability to draw trans and non-binary characters in a non-stereotypical way is essential.

This masterclass is aimed at artists of any gender and no prior knowledge required. With guidance and feedback from an expert tutor, you will examine your own subconscious biases, learn crucial concepts and draw your own characters by following practical tips.

The fear of “getting things wrong” can make exploring ways to create trans and non-binary characters intimidating. This class will offer a safe space to learn and make mistakes without judgement, with the goal of developing your practice. Illustrators working in any media, whether digital or analogue, are welcome.

What you’ll do

  • Learn what makes a ‘trans-coded’ character.
  • Look at examples of trans-positive and transphobic portrayals.
  • Engage in creative exercises to examine your own subconscious biases in a non-judgemental space.
  • Learn practical tips for drawing trans men, trans women and non-binary characters.
  • Draw your own trans and/or non-binary characters by following guidance.
  • Receive support and feedback from tutor Julian Gray.

What you’ll need

  • A device that can use Zoom and Padlet simultaneously
  • A way to broadcast video and audio in Zoom
  • Pen/pencil and paper/notebook for making notes
  • Drawing tools for creating artwork during the class (either analogue or digital)
  • For illustrators using analogue drawing media: a camera (e.g. phone camera) so that you can take pictures of your work and upload them to Padlet during the class
  • For illustrators using digital drawing media: a way to upload your work to Padlet during the class (e.g. by export image files, take screenshots)

Experience needed

Some prior experience of drawing figures and characters is needed.

About the tutor

Julian Gray is an illustrator based in Manchester, UK. Unapologetically queer, trans, disabled and mixed race, Julian is keen to create artwork with authentic representation of populations marginalised by society. His illustrations are often character-driven and pull from a variety of influences including (but not limited to) film noir, 1980s comic art and the Victorian aristocracy.
