In-Person Masterclass: Urban Sketching at New River Head

Get an exclusive look at our new home at New River Head at this on-site masterclass with illustrator Siôn Ap Tomos.

Siôn has been sharing his knowledge and experience of drawing the London landscape for over 20 years, and now he’ll be your guide to our own little patch of the city. This is a unique opportunity to depict the architecture of the site and its surroundings before renovation work begins to transform it into the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration.

Siôn will guide you on making decisions about what to draw and how to develop a drawing of a place. He will also give you lots of practical hints and tips on capturing buildings in different ways, understanding perspective and depicting nature alongside architecture.

What you’ll do

  • Create drawings of the New River Head site and surrounding views.
  • Be shown different location drawing methods and styles to explore.
  • Be guided on deciding what to draw in a location.
  • Learn ways of constructing and developing a location drawing.
  • Explore methods of depicting architecture.
  • Explore ways of depicting the nature on the site.
  • Understand and use perspective in location drawings.
  • Use watercolour on location in various ways.

What you’ll need

  • A4 or larger sketchbook
  • Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener with container

Graphite, coloured pencils, watercolour sets, brushes and brush pens will be provided but you can bring your own if you prefer.

Experience needed

Some experience of drawing would be helpful.

Need to know

This in-person masterclass will be conducted entirely outdoors at the New River Head site. It will be weather-dependant, with shelter available in the case of occasional rain.

We will be taking photos of participants and work created at this unique event. If you would prefer not to have yourself or your work photographed, please let us know on the day.

About the tutor

Siôn Ap Tomos is a Welsh illustrator, designer and educator based in London with over 20 years’ experience. He has worked for a wide variety of clients, from museums to newspapers and advertising, on a range of subject matter, including editorial, reportage and historical illustrations. He also regularly collaborates on illustration-based educational projects with schools, galleries and hospitals. He teaches at Central Saint Martins and House of Illustration.
