Illustrating the Animal Kingdom is an opportunity to explore a fascinating subject matter through a variety of methods, styles and techniques, discovering ways to capture animal form, movement and detail.
On Wednesday evenings, we will explore land, water and air, working mainly from photographic reference and some taxidermy specimens in the studio at House of Illustration. On two additional Saturday field trips, we will also depict the subject live at one of London’s city farms and at London Zoo (admission fee included in course price).
From wild mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and creatures of the oceans and rivers to the beloved domestic pet, you’ll have the opportunity to both depict your favourite creatures and develop an understanding of species you are less familiar with through image-making.
We will take inspiration from the work and methods of illustrators past and present and be very hands-on as we explore the subject via different materials and techniques including various drawing materials, watercolour, ink and collage.
The course will suit anyone with some experience of drawing and image-making, either recently or in the past, whether professionally or purely personally, but who wishes to gain much more experience and understanding of this particular area and is open to experimenting and exploring different ways of doing it.
