Through a series of lectures, demonstrations and varied practical activities, you will be guided through ways to illustrate people from observation (using live models and photographic reference) and from your imagination.
We will break down the subject into key sections: the geography of the head, body proportions and body types, depicting eyes and other features, conveying different ages and genders and capturing gesture and movement.
We will move gradually through the week from basic activities to more complex challenges, encouraging experimentation and broadening your illustration experience.
Taking inspiration from the work of illustrators past and present, we’ll be exploring the subject hands on via different materials and techniques, from water soluble pens and pencils to dip pen and ink, from ink wash to watercolour and collage.
The course will suit anyone with some recent or past experience of drawing and image-making, whether professionally or purely personally, but who is relatively new to this particular subject matter.
- A range of graphite pencils, specifically 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B

- An A4 cartridge paper sketchpad (130gms), preferably with detachable pages (useful for scanning, photocopying and displaying)
All other materials supplied by House of Illustration.
