How to enter

Step-by-step instructions for entering this year's competition.

The process for entering is simple: just follow these step-by-step instructions.

First off, you’ll need to read the three poems you’re going to be illustrating.

Before you begin working on your illustrations, download the Illustration Instructions. Please ensure you have read the instructions carefully as incorrectly submitted entries will not be considered.

Please note that this year we are not asking entrants to create a binding design.

Once you’ve finished your illustrations, you’ll need to pay your entry fee over on our payment page. Please make your payment well in advance of the closing date, to avoid any last-minute technical issues. Keep a note of your order number as you’ll need it for your application form.

Send your application in one email to with the subject line ‘[Your Name] BIC 2020’.

This email must include:

  • A completed application form (download below). This must be saved as a Word document with the file name '[YourName]_Application_Form'.
  • One four-page PDF containing your three illustrations on three separate pages and one further page with the three poem titles and the illustration number in the same order as the illustrations. This must be saved with the filename '[YourName]_Illustrations'. This PDF must not contain your name elsewhere and must not exceed 3MB.*

*Any PDFs over 3MB will not be considered.

Make sure you have submitted your entry by the deadline of 9am GMT on Friday 17 January 2020.

Please note that by submitting your entry, you agree to the Terms and Conditions.

Please don’t post your entry to your own website/blog/social media pages until the longlist is announced on 14 February 2020, so our judges can judge the competition fairly and anonymously.
