Sue Dray, fashion illustrator and Course Leader of Fashion Illustration at London College of Fashion, tells us about the masterclass she ran this month, inspired by our current exhibition, Jo Brocklehurst: Nobodies and Somebodies.

Ahead of our experimental drawing workshops taking place this Saturday (free with gallery entry), we hear about another Jo Brocklehurst-inspired drawing session...

‘London Calling’ by the Clash, a punk band from the 80s was our opening soundtrack to draw to and it perfectly fitted the mood and tone of the masterclass I ran last weekend at the House of Illustration.

The theme was inspired and in honor of the master herself the late but never forgotten Jo Brocklehurst, fashion illustrator of the club scene in London, New York and Berlin from the mid 70s to the early 90s. Whilst at Central Saint Martins I was very lucky to be in her company. We drew the avant-garde of the time and any punks that were in Charing Cross Road.

Our muse and model was Manko (on Instagram as mankoomanko) - and she has to be my favourite model ever. She has fire in her eyes, holds an unbelievable pose and loves the attention . What more could you ask for?

After the warm-up sketches the participants started to feed off her energy and I encouraged them to explore bold and assertive marks adding an explosion of colour . The results were brilliant. We focused on hands and feet, something Jo exaggerated to great effect. She drew gnarly expressive hands and oversized feet usually donning a pair of Dr. Martens.

My head in the cab home was buzzing. The thrill of hosting such an event and drawing for the day in a perfect and inspirational place was a true honour for us all.
