We’re firm believers that illustration can help us tell stories that otherwise wouldn’t be told – and ‘Clerkenwell: Now & Then’ is testament to just that.

‘Clerkenwell: Now & Then’ is an illustrated map with a twist. Instead of being illustrated with pictures of ‘important’ buildings, this joyful and colourful map records the memories of a group of older local residents about the area around New River Head.

Recollections of Clerkenwell over the decades are brought vividly to life with illustrations made by the residents in a series of workshops with illustrator and educator Siôn Ap Tomos at local community space The Peel Institute.

Picture slithering eels outside pie and mash shops on Exmouth Street Market; giggly visits to the Merlin Street Public Baths, and children playing innocently and obliviously in the WWII bomb site on the Golden Lane Estate.

"It’s fabulous – I want them to do the rest of London as well now!" Jason Rosam, BBC Radio London
