Women in Print Study Day: Marie Neurath and Her Contemporaries

Delve into the world of mid-century classroom picture books and the pioneering women who created them.

When, Where

This informal study day will shine a light on Marie Neurath and her contemporaries: pioneering women who used design to revolutionise education.

Leading experts in the field will consider the ways in which Neurath, Marion Richardson, Gwen White and Barbara Jones utilised illustration in the classroom to promote a more egalitarian and creative educational agenda.

Programme:

Barbara Jones' This and That in the context of the DIA and post-war design agendas – Joe Pearson of Design for Today

Marie Neurath: designing for children – Professor Sue Walker of the University of Reading

A History of Everyday Things in England: illustrated histories for children – Desdemona McCannon of Women in Print

Dryad handicrafts: the leaflets that made making easy – Jane Audas

Marion Richardson: writing as pattern – Dr Bryony Quinn

Gwen White: A perspective on pattern – Kate Farley

This study day is part of the Women In Print series of events convened by Desdemona McCannon and is also part of London Design Festival.

Important to know:

Please bring warm layers as the South Gallery is kept at a cool temperature to conserve the artwork on display.
