Weekend Course: Developing Your Graphic Novel

An advanced, intensive course for developing your graphic novel with Rachael Ball.

When, Where

This advanced, intensive course on the weekend of Saturday 2 – Sunday 3 May is designed for students who have already attended a course on creating a graphic novel, or who are working on a graphic novel.

If you would benefit from further mentoring in shaping and refining your script and layout, this is the course for you.

During the course you will:

  • Explore your key characters’ unique mode of language, expression and movement.
  • Create natural dialogue that flows and creates impact.
  • Draft, develop and perfect a page of script.
  • Develop the pace of your story visually and create a well-considered storyboard.
  • Create a beautiful page of finished artwork which brings the visual elements in harmony with the meaning of your script.
  • Experiment with perspective, shots and media in your layout to add striking visuals to your story.

  • Discuss your work one-to-one and in stimulating and supportive group discussions.
  • Troubleshoot any issues you may have been having with your novel, both visually and with the script/plot.
  • Develop a future plan to help you move forward with your tutor artistically and professionally.

  • 2B pencil
  • Eraser
  • Biro
  • A3 sketchpad
  • Notebook
  • A4 ringbinder and sleeves
  • A3 or A4 portfolio to protect your artwork (recommended)

About the tutor:

Rachael Ball is an acclaimed cartoonist who started out cartooning for cult comic Deadline in 1988. Her graphic novel, The Inflatable Woman (Bloomsbury), was a Guardian Best Graphic Novel 2015 and one of Paul Gravett’s Best of 2015. Her second graphic novel Wolf (SelfMadeHero) has been called “a timeless classic” (Pipedream Comics) and described by the Times Literary Supplement as “poignant and elegiac”.Her work has featured in the House of Illustration’s Comix Creatrix exhibition and the Cartoon Museum’s The Inking Woman exhibition. Her second Arts Council funded graphic novel was published by SelfMadeHero in October 2018.

She is currently working on her third graphic novel, The Patsy Papers and a children’s book, Little Pea and the Robot. She also co-coordinates the London branch of Laydeez Do Comics, a forum which promotes women in comics. Rachael has 16 years’ teaching experience and is represented by Kirsty Maclachlan (DGA).
