Find ways to draw that suit you on this six-week course with award-winning illustrator and educator Merlin Strangeway. She'll guide you through six principles of drawing using six different media, examining a variety of approaches and artists’ work to instruct and inspire.
This course is designed for those who have completed our Beginners' Guide to Drawing or Exploring Drawing courses, or those who already have some experience of drawing and want to expand their skills.
Week 1: How to Look (Graphite, Conte & Charcoal)
Week 2: The Energy within a Line (Ink)
Week 3: Theory of Colour (Acrylics)
Week 4: Rhythm: Variety and Unity (Watercolour)
Week 5: Proportion and Composition (Collage)
Week 6: Narrative (Mixed Media)
You are welcome to bring a sketchbook if you like but all other material will be provided by House of Illustration.
About the tutor:
Merlin Strangeway is an award-winning illustrator, scribe and educator who’s been teaching at House of Illustration since 2011. Passionate about using the arts as a tool for social engagement and change, she believes that everyone has the ability to make beautiful illustrations.
Merlin specialises in scientific illustration, and currently holds the post of Medical Illustrator in Residence at Guy’s Pathology Museum, Kings College, London. She has lectured internationally and taught at numerous art colleges, schools and universities across the UK.
Selected previous clients include Tate Modern, The British Library, The Design Museum, Central Saint Martins, NHS, John Lewis, Bloomsbury Books, Latitude Festival and Time Out.
