This exciting six-week course guides participants through the fundamentals of drawing, breaking down what can seem a mysterious and complex skill into bite-size, fun and easy-to-tackle activities.
Focusing on six ‘keys’ that can help unlock the world of drawing, award-winning illustrator and educator Merlin Strangeway will guide you through the fundamentals of:
Line: Drawing as a tool for seeing (week 1)
Form: Construction, tone, depth (week 2)
Colour: An eye for colour (week 3)
Composition: The art of the story (week 4)
The Figure: Gesture and expression (week 5)
Visual Symbols: Design and illustration (week 6)
Meet like-minded people as you explore your creative side. Ideal for the beginner, the curious or for more experienced artists who crave a structured approach to the art of drawing, this is a brand new course, programmed in response to popular demand. Participants will also have the chance to make use of House of Illustration’s exhibitions for inspiration and reference.
A six-session course on Sundays 9 September – 14 October 11am – 1.30pm.

About the tutor:
Merlin is an award-winning illustrator, scribe and educator, working with the House of Illustration since 2011. She is passionate about using the arts as a tool for social engagement and change and believes that everyone has the ability to make beautiful illustrations!
Merlin specialises in medical illustration, particularly in the field of women’s health. She has lectured internationally and taught at numerous art colleges, schools and universities across the UK.
Previous clients include: Tate Modern, The British Library, The Design Museum, Central Saint Martins, NHS, John Lewis, Bloomsbury Books, Latitude Festival and Time Out.
