This brand new course is now on offer due to overwhelming demand! Designed especially to help students move on to the next stage after our beginners’ course, it’s also perfect for those feeling a bit rusty and looking to get back in to drawing or those with some prior experience wanting to expand their skills. Running for six weeks, beginning Sunday 9 June.
Merlin’s structured approach will guide you through six key principles of drawing using six different media. Examining a variety of approaches and artists’ work for both inspiration and instruction, we will work on finding ways to draw that suit you.
Week 1: Ways of Seeing (Graphite, Conte & Charcoal)
Week 2: Line Drawing (Ink)
Week 3: Mass Drawing (Acrylics)
Week 4: Rhythm: Variety and Unity (Watercolour)
Week 5: Proportion (Collage)
Week 6: Composition (Mixed Media)
Materials will be provided but students are also welcome to bring any favourite materials and a sketchbook.
About the tutor:
Merlin Strangeway is an award-winning illustrator, scribe and educator who’s been teaching at House of Illustration since 2011. Passionate about using the arts as a tool for social engagement and change, she believes that everyone has the ability to make beautiful illustrations.
Merlin specialises in scientific illustration, and currently holds the post of Medical Illustrator in Residence at Guy’s Pathology Museum, Kings College, London. She has lectured internationally and taught at numerous art colleges, schools and universities across the UK.
Selected previous clients include Tate Modern, The British Library, The Design Museum, Central Saint Martins, NHS, John Lewis, Bloomsbury Books, Latitude Festival and Time Out.
