As winner of the Book Illustration Competition, hosted annually by The Folio Society and House of Illustration, Max Löffler was commissioned to illustrate this stunning new collection of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most compelling cases, which has just been published with eight black and white integrated illustrations.
The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is given a contemporary twist with Max’s unsettling illustrations. His trompe l’oeil style, which creates optical illusions through illustration, adds menacing realism to the images and a contemporary twist to the tales.
"Winning the competition felt unreal, but working in depth with The Folio Society team on the illustrations was a real, pioneering experience for me." - Max Löffler

Max was born in Aschaffenburg, Germany, and studied graphic design at the Design faculty of the Hochschule Darmstadt. His artworks are mostly created using digital techniques and he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Silver ADC Award, a Joseph Binder Distinction and a Gold 3x3 Award.
Since The Book Illustration Competition launched in 2011, it has led to some fantastic opportunities for winners and runners-up. As well as the prestigious Folio Society commission received by the winners, a number of past entrants have gone on to illustrate further books for The Folio Society and other publishers.
